Best Time to Visit Kazakhstan: A Month-by-Month Travel Guide

The Short Answer

The best time to visit Kazakhstan depends entirely on what you want to do. For hiking and outdoor travel near Almaty, the window is May through September. For winter sports at Shymbulak ski resort, come in December through February. For the cheapest flights and fewest crowds, try April or October — the shoulder seasons.

Kazakhstan is a massive country — the ninth largest in the world — and the climate varies dramatically by region. But most visitors focus on Almaty and the surrounding mountains, so this guide centers on that region while noting important differences elsewhere.

Spring: April & May

Spring arrives quickly in Almaty. By April, the city parks are blooming and daytime temperatures are a comfortable 15–20°C. This is one of the most beautiful times to be in the city: flowering apricot trees, green mountains above the roofline, and almost no tourists.

The mountains are still snowy in April, so Charyn Canyon and the foothills around Almaty are often the better bet — the red rock against spring green is particularly striking. By May, the alpine trails begin to open. Wildflowers cover the meadows above 2,000 meters. The Kolsay Lakes become accessible from late May.

Average Almaty temperatures in spring: 10–22°C (50–72°F). Evening can still be cold — bring layers.

Crowds: Low. Prices: Low.

Summer: June, July & August

Summer is the peak season for outdoor activities. All hiking trails are open. The Kolsay Lakes, Kaiyndy Lake, and Big Almaty Lake are at their most vibrant. Days are long, skies are generally clear, and the Tien Shan views are extraordinary. This is the best time for trekking, horse riding, and camping.

June is the sweet spot: the grass is still green, the snowmelt keeps the lakes at maximum volume, and weekends in the mountains feel festive without being overrun. July and August bring the hottest temperatures — Almaty city can reach 35°C — but the mountains stay pleasant. Afternoon thunderstorms are common at altitude; plan morning hikes and descend before 2pm.

Average Almaty temperatures in summer: 22–34°C (72–93°F).

Crowds: Moderate (high by Kazakh standards, still low by international tourist destination standards). Prices: Moderate to high.

Autumn: September & October

Many experienced travelers call September and October the best time to visit Kazakhstan. Here is why: the summer crowds are gone, prices drop, the air is crisp and clear, and the autumn color in the mountains is extraordinary. The larches and aspens above 2,000 meters turn gold and orange — a contrast against the dark spruce forests and blue skies that is almost impossibly photogenic.

The Charyn Canyon is stunning in autumn light. The Kolsay Lakes are at their quietest. Almaty boulevards fill with fallen leaves and the restaurants glow in the evenings. Bring a proper jacket — mountain temperatures drop below 0°C at night by October, and the first snow usually arrives at altitude by mid-October.

Average Almaty temperatures in autumn: 5–20°C (41–68°F). Nights can be cold from mid-September.

Crowds: Low. Prices: Low.

Winter: November through March

Winter in Kazakhstan is serious. Almaty temperatures can drop to −20°C, and Nur-Sultan (Astana) regularly sees −35°C. This is not the time for casual tourism unless you come specifically for the cold. But if you do — there are rewards.

Shymbulak Ski Resort (3,200m above Almaty) operates from December through March and offers the best skiing in Central Asia. Runs are varied, the gondola up from Medeu is impressively fast, and lift ticket prices are a fraction of European resorts. The snow is dry and reliable at altitude.

Medeu ice rink — the world highest Olympic-sized rink — hosts public skating sessions from November onward. City life in Almaty continues normally through winter; locals are accustomed to it, and the restaurant and nightlife scene does not slow down.

Average Almaty temperatures in winter: −15 to 0°C (5–32°F).

Crowds: Very low (except ski slopes in peak ski season). Prices: Low for accommodation and flights, higher for ski passes.
