What to know before visiting Shymkent

The sunny south

Shymkent is Kazakhstan's third-largest city and its most southern — sitting just 15 kilometres from the Uzbekistan border. It's warmer, louder, and more colourful than Almaty or Astana: the food is richer (the south has the best plov and samsa in Kazakhstan), the hospitality is famously generous, and the bazaars carry the authentic energy of the Silk Road. For travellers exploring southern Kazakhstan, Shymkent is an essential stop.

Top attractions

Shymkent Bazaar — One of the largest and most atmospheric markets in Kazakhstan. Freshly made samsa from clay tandoor ovens, steaming lagman, mountains of spices, and the lively rhythm of a true southern market.

Ordabasy Square & Old City — The reconstructed central square with fountains and the historic Khan's Palace. The surrounding old city quarter has narrow lanes, traditional architecture, and excellent teahouses.

Central Park — A sprawling green park with cafés and walking paths — the social heart of the city on warm evenings.

Kazygurt Mountain — 50 km from the city, this sacred peak in the Western Tien Shan is linked by legend to Noah's Ark. Hiking trails and panoramic views of three countries on a clear day.

Best time to visit

March–May and September–November. Summers are hot (38–42°C). Spring and autumn are ideal — warm days, cool evenings, and the bazaar overflowing with seasonal fruit.

Getting there

Shymkent Airport (CIT) has direct flights from Almaty (1.5h), Astana (2h), Dubai, and Istanbul. Shymkent is the natural gateway to Turkistan (2.5h by car).
