What to know before visiting Burabay

The Kazakh Switzerland

Burabay (also known as Borovoe) is Kazakhstan's most beloved natural resort — crystal-clear lakes, dense pine and birch forests, and dramatic granite formations rising straight from the water. Located 250 km north of Astana, it is Kazakhstan's most visited national park and the capital's primary weekend escape. The nickname "Kazakh Switzerland" says it all — modest in scale but extraordinary in concentrated natural beauty.

Top attractions

Borovoe Lake & Zhumbaktas Rock — The centrepiece of the park. Clear blue water and the granite "Riddle Rock" rising from the surface — one of the most photographed landscapes in Kazakhstan. Legend says a beautiful woman was turned to stone here, waiting for her beloved to return.

Blue Bay (Sinii Zaliv) — A turquoise bay with calm, shallow water — ideal for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding in summer.

Hiking & cycling trails — Dozens of marked routes through forest and along lakeshores, from easy family walks to challenging ridge hikes with panoramic views.

Horse riding — The traditional way to explore the park. Available for guided rides throughout the resort area.

Winter activities — Cross-country skiing, ice fishing, and horse-drawn sleigh rides from December through February.

Best time to visit

June–August for swimming and hiking. December–February for a magical snow-covered landscape. Avoid July weekends when Astana day-trippers fill the park.

Getting there

250 km north of Astana (3h by road). Regular buses from Astana to Shchuchinsk, then taxi to the park entrance. Easily combined with Astana in 2–3 days.
